Accommodations in Baltimore

Whilst hotel accommodation is not in short supply here and the BACVA will help you find accommodation to meet your budget - there is definitely a shortage of good lower-end budget hotels in the city center. The city seems geared to, and has plenty to offer, visiting business people to the Convention Center or to the burgeoning financial district - but if you’re a family on a budget visiting Baltimore; good low-cost accommodation can be very difficult to find anywhere near the city center and the main attractions. However, there are plenty of cheaper accommodation opportunities around Canton, Fells Point and Federal Hill; to the east of the city center.

Whilst the Baltimore International College can offer some fine hotel accommodation in Baltimore, you might prefer something like the new 700+ bedroom Hilton Hotel just opened by the Convention Center; for a ‘high-end hotel to stay in. Otherwise two of the best boutique style hotel accommodations in Baltimore are the Pier 5 Hotel and the Admiral Fell Inn - both of which are part of the Harbor Magic Group. Despite being owned by the same company the two hotels very much have their own styles and character.  The Pier 5 Hotel occupies a modern building on a private pier at Harborplace, not far from the National Aquarium. It is quite small with only 66 rooms, but they are all furnished and fitted to what Pier 5 says are whimsical designs with vibrant colors. Most of the accommodation in this hotel is in standard bedrooms. However, they do also have three types of suites, culminating in their ‘Mystic Suite’ that features amongst other things a Jacuzzi, personal bar and walk-in closets. The hotel has a steak house, sea-food restaurant, coffee-house and sandwich bar ready to serve you; and is acknowledged as one of the best places to eat in the city. The Admiral Fell Inn is eastwards along waterfront where it occupies a historic building. Whilst the building dates back to the 1770s, there are pieces of antique furniture here that are also as old. The 80 guestrooms in this accommodation are conservatively decorated and some of them feature original wooden roof beams. As no two rooms are the same here it’s impossible to list all the possible room options; however, some like the Taylor Room have canopy beds. To eat in there’s a tea room, sea-food restaurant and coffee-house style bar. Both the Pier 5 and the Admiral Fell have gym facilities, can organize meeting and conference rooms and have stylists etc on site.

If you’re looking for something a step down from these prices there’s the standard fare in chain hotel accommodation available at several Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza and similar hotels in downtown Baltimore. In the mid-range accommodation - if you don’t want to use the usual hotel chains - try somewhere like the Inn at 2920. On Elliott Street, I think you can guess the number, this is basically a B&B but it has the feel of a boutique hotel. Renowned for its gourmet breakfasts, luxurious beds and Jacuzzis in most rooms - all for well under $200 a night.

At the budget end of the accommodation on offer in Baltimore I’d go for a one of the small independent places and soak up that famous ‘Hey hon’ greeting. The Ann Street B&B, that’s the place name not the owners, has rooms under $150 a night in which you can enjoy antique furniture by open fires in an 18th century townhouse. Similar to this is Mr Mole B&B on Bolton Street. A superbly restored town house in the cultural district of the city and is convenient accommodation for John Hopkins University, it also offers garaged parking. If you really want a hotel to stay in there’s a couple to be recommended at this level of accommodation. The Mount Vernon Hotel, on West Franklin Street, is quite large being spread over 9 floors it has 135 rooms providing more than adequate accommodation. Also, there’s the Peabody Court - Clarion Hotel, on Cathedral Street. Accommodation here is typically around $150 a night. However, according to the hotels information it classes itself as a boutique hotel.
