Baltimore Services
Being a major US city Baltimore has all the requisite services necessary to support it. Employment patterns for Baltimore Cityshow that out of a workforce of 370,000 - less than 10% of them are directly involved in an occupation that actually produces or makes anything that is tangible. That 10% is the portion of the population involved in mining, construction or manufacturing services. Whilst those services were once the backbone of the Baltimore economy they were decimated during the deindustrialization periods of the 1980s. Today it is actually the 20%, or so, of the population working in professional, business and financial services; that is really responsible for generating most of the wealth that is driving the city forward.
Needless to say a big city needs a lot of governing and Government services are currently the second largest employer in the city. The largest employers are those involved in education and health services, accounting for a massive 28% of the working population living in Baltimore City. The John Hopkins University Hospital, to the north of the city center, employs over 25,000 staff, and can by itself account for a large part of the 28% of people employed in education and Health services. Established in the late 1800s the John Hopkins University Hospital has established an international reputation as a teaching hospital and won a Nobel Prize for the discovery of restriction enzymes, leading to genetic engineering. Whilst Health and Education services speak for themselves, other Baltimore government services on offer include: Housing services, Children & Youth services and Community services to name just three. In total, government services in Baltimore account for employing 22% of the total Baltimore workforce.
Reflecting the move of Baltimore into a services led economy is the fact that: information, financial, business, leisure and hospitality services; all along with other undefined service workers - account for 32% of the total workforce. The Baltimore Development Corporation has been working for many years to attract such new companies to the city, as well as also helping existing companies to develop. A major force in the financial service sector in Baltimore is Legg-Mason, a global asset management firm with an annual revenue over $4 billion - it is one of the Fortune 500 company’s located in the city. Established in 1899 its headquarters are on the junction of Charles and Lombard Street, in the 35 storey Legg-Chase building where most of its 4000 employees work. The Legg-chase building is, perhaps fittingly, currently the tallest building in Baltimore. Also headquartered in Baltimore is the T. Rowe Price Investment Company. It employs some 5000 people and has an annual revenue in excess of $2 billion. T. Rowe Price is a Fortune 1000 company and is listed on NASDAQ.
Around 10% of the working population are employed in transportation or utility services; one of which is the Constellation Energy Company, which itself employs 10,000 people in Baltimore. Constellation Energy is a Fortune 500 company providing electricity to more than 1.25 million customers nationwide. Employing nearly 20,000 people and responsible for well over $30 billion worth of cargo passing through it; the Maryland Port Authority that operates the port at Baltimore has always been, and continues to be, a major contributor the wealth of the city. The annual revenue from the ports services is worth over $4 billion a year.
With 7% of the working population employed in leisure and hospitality services the residents of Baltimore know how to enjoy themselves and look after their visitors. The new 700+ bed Hilton Hotel, recently opened by the Baltimore Convention Center, will undoubtedly have created even more jobs for anyone interested in a career in leisure and hospitality services in Baltimore. The Baltimore Area Convention and Visitors Association exists to advise people about the services available to them whilst at the Convention center or visiting Baltimore. Whilst their main focus is on providing information on hotels, attractions and leisure services in the city, they can also advise you about retail shopping, dining and nightlife.
